It is thought that illness is a result of imbalances and blockages in the flow of energy, or qi, through the body. A shiatsu therapist applies finger pressure to specific points on the energy channels, or meridians, which releases blockages and awakens the body’s own healing energy. This touch improves the qi flow through the meridians to the organs. When the organs are in balance the whole body is healthy. A scientific explanation is that shiatsu calms an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which improves circulation, relieves stiff muscles, and alleviates stress.
