Speaking of spiritual matters is always somewhat strange. This is partly because much of the experience of the spirit is beyond words. It is also due to the way that many religions have spoke of spirituality in such arrogant and exclusive terms. It brings to mind an image of someone holding a glass of water and believing and acting as if they possess the entire ocean. They then proceed to claim that their glass of water is the one true glass of water, that all other glasses of water are false and anyone who doesn't believe in their glass of water will not be saved.
By knowing the true essence of a glass of water it is possible to know much about the nature of the ocean. Yet, the glass of water is never the ocean. I feel that it is equally important to realize that however we comprehend Spirit or God or Higher Power that by its nature it is always something that is greater than ourselves. The very concept of a Universal Spirit makes it understandable that each individual and specific culture would have a view or belief system in this regard. It is actually fascinating the many variety of spiritual languages and customs have so much in common. By seeking with profound curiosity to learn what each person's special view of the Universal Spirit, we add to our lives. This awareness encourage each of us to relate to one another's spirituality with respect and tolerance.
