Chronic Worry

Chronic worrying can be a major consumer of time and energy. An interesting approach can be to attempt to worry more efficiently. Try scheduling a special time to worry, allowing only a specific amount of time like a half hour. Pick something specific to worry about. Take paper and pen and begin listing all the things that you control and those you do not control. Set aside the list of what you don't control and know that these are not things you need to think about. (Offering this list to God or your Higher Power is a wonderful option.) Take the list of things that you can do something about and write out several concrete action steps for changing the situation. Schedule target dates/times when you will do the actions steps. You can also add a list of allies (those who can help you). If you need more time to worry about this situation schedule time in the next day or so. When worrying thoughts occur to you can affirm that you have time scheduled to deal with them and move on to other activities.
